Cilic wins fourth title in Zagreb, 10th overall Zagreb Indoors
Marin Cilic is again the winner of the PBZ Zagreb Indoors and this is his fourth title here. This year he won all matches in straight sets, including the one in the final, as he defeated top-seeded German Tommy Haas, No. 12 at the ATP singles rankings, by 6:3, 6:4. Cilic is now one of only three Croatian players who won at least ten titles during the career: his coach Goran Ivanisevic has won 22 and Marin is now tied with Ivan Ljubicic.
"It is nice feeling to be in the final here after tough last year. I played good tennis this week", Cilic said. "This was really important for me. And I played today the best tennis comparing to all the matches this week. Goran Ivanisevic has prepared me tactically. I served good when I got rhytm, but I would say my return was on the top."
Final did not start well for Croat, as Haas broke in the first game. Cilic recovered quickly and won five out of next six games. Serve did not work good for Cilic in the first set, having only 38% of first serves in, but his returns were great and he was very solid from the baseline.
Haas had break point for 4:2 lead in the second set but failed to convert it and Cilic showed again some excellent shots, winning three games in a row. When Haas served to stay in the match at 3:5 Cilic squandered match point, but in the 10th game Cilic used the next opportunity.
"Congratulations to Marin. Marin played very solid match today, he served good when he needed to. I did not feel I played the the best tennis and he played big points better. Marin obviously plas good at home and is good player overall", Haas said.
Cilic underlined how happy he was and how important this victory was:
"I played this week under the big pressure, defending 250 points from last year. If I did not ake it it would be tough to be direct acceptance to Monte Carlo, Rome and Madrid", Cilic said.
